hello,
all three of my ducklings hatched but I have a few questions. The first two hatched around 4:00 this morning about 17 hours ago and the final one hatched around midday but only detached from the umbilical cord in the egg 4hours later (5 hours ago). The late hatcher has only opened his eyes once that I have seen and after that keeps them closed. He’s very floppy (I don’t know if it is more than usual?) all three of the ducklings don’t walk around. Rather they lunge/shuffle? Is this normal? They have all had a tiny bit of sugar water. The middle picture is of the later chick with the eye “issues”
Thankyou x

Just figured out that the duckling has some shell membrane stuck over the eye, I wet it but can’t get it off. The duckling is scratching at his eye occasionally.

Adorable! And yes hatching is hard work. Give them a few more hours to get their legs moving the right direction after being so curled up for so long.
You can use a little warm water on a cotton ball, soft towel, q-tip or something like that to moisten any leftover specks. They will clean their body by themselves, but it is good to be sure their eyes and face and nares are clean and open.

Congrats on the hatch! Any more yet to hatch?

Ah ok brilliant. I have 5 Cayuga cross Aylesbury eggs to hatch in 6 days time hopefully. Thanks

My 2 batches of hatchling were only able to walk without trouble at 2 days old. At 0 day old they couldn't even stand and their legs looked spraddled.
Ah yes. My duckies are slowly getting more and more stable on there feet now. I was worried just because they had been shrink wrapped in the shells and I had to assist with some of the hatching.

Those usually do take a bit longer. Glad the assist was successful and glad to hear they are already improving!

You know we’ll need more pics for proof. :D
