BIRD NO-MELT SUET RECIPE

1 c. crunchy peanut butter (8 oz.)
1 c. lard (8 oz.)
2 c. quick cook oats
2 c. cornmeal
1 c. white flour
1/3 c. sugar
1/2 c. sunflower seeds (opt.)
1/2 c. safflower seeds (opt.)
1/2 c. raisins (opt.)

Melt the lard and peanut butter in a microwave or stove top pan. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Pour the suet mixture into a square container about 2" thick. Store the suet in the freezer. These suet cakes will not melt in warm winter weather or during summer temperatures. Makes 3 Tupperware sandwich containers. (If adding optional ingredients this will then make 5 to 6 sandwich containers.)


I found this on cooks.com. I think I will try it with shortening instead of lard, i think crisco has no trans fat, which i have heard is hard on chickens.

At TSC you can get the suet squares for .99 each up to 1.23 each. I put them in all the pens during the winter when they can use a little more fat in their diet. The 18 big girls will go through one everyday. The silkies...not nearly as much.

TSC prices rock! The feed store I was at usually does have higher prices than TSC, but I like to support them because it is a small family owned business, with absolutely fantastic customer service (I like that).

Thanks for posting the suet recipe. That's a great idea. I'm sure a lot of you have discovered the same thing I have; for pure entertainment (ours) nothing (well, nothing having to do with chickens anyway ) beats feeding worms to the gals. I just split a gut every time. It reminds me of a game we played at recess in elementary school. "Tackle the Bear". One of us had a ball, usually a football, and would take off running, he was the Bear, then the rest of us little squirts would chase him down, tackle him, grab the ball and take off running. I've seen one poor worm change chickens a half-dozen times before somebody swallows it. Kind of a chicken version of the game!

I save my bacon grease and when I have enough I add seeds and grains to it to make suet for my chickens. This is what they do when they see me coming with it
