They put themselves to bed

In the swiftly gathering dusk two hens crouched by the open coop door. Nervously, they eyed the lengthening shadows. Free ranging was great during the day, but predators lurked closer at night. Chicken #7 was particularly nervous after her chance encounter the The Dog. If only the coop door had been closed! Her wing had been ripped brutally, and now hung, useless, at her side. There was always the hope that The Woman would return and close the coop door tonight. The chickens glanced around again, then headed for their coop that offered no safety. There was always a chance no predator would seek them out tonight. There was always a chance.

As sad as this story is, I doubt that predators killing chickens is considered animal abuse or neglect. If that were true a whole lot of us here might be in trouble.

OP, seeing how it's your landlord, best not to make waves unless you are ready and able to move at any time. Is it possible that you could go out and close the coop door after sundown?
 
That seems like quite the predicament you are in. I'm sorry you have to go through that!

Search "farm animal sanctuary" or "farm animal rescue" and your state's name. You may find one. I honestly think you should still report them if you are able to remain anonymous. Just seeing that hen's broken wing with the open sore says a lot. Also, I think if they tried to evict you for reporting a crime (IF they found out it was you), they would be committing another crime. I know all this is easier said than done, but you do have options.
I don’t think any state allows landlords to give repercussions for reporting a land lord for anything. And if you have a lease. That states you have laundry access, they have to uphold that. Otherwise they have already violated the lease agreement. Just document, document, document. Literally EVERYTHING. Even if you think it’s not relevant, document anyway. Especially past conversations. The more specific you are the better. Including dates and times and places that conversations were taken. Believe it or not just documenting things goes a lot farther in court than what most people think.

As someone who is a landlord with multiple rental properties I can tell you that -No, a landlord cannot give you any grief for reporting them for something, unless said reporting is unfounded and rises to the level of harassment.

IIRC the OP has been living there for quite a few years and perhaps may not have a current lease but has rolled over into a month to month tenancy. If that's the case they can give her 30 days notice to vacate at any time for any number of reasons in most states.

As difficult as it can be, at times like this it's often best to just MYOB. Or better yet, in this case, just move so you don't have to deal with/ be upset by it anymore.

Yup. But she shouldn’t also live in fear and have to tread lightly. If she makes a report and then they say “oh you have 30 days to leave” she doesn’t have to leave without a judge telling her to. And if she can show the time line and how it would be because of the reports, she may still have to move but in most cases, at least around here, the landlord has to cover the costs to move and could go even farther.

As far as the 30 days goes without a lease, I believe that is by state by state too. It could be more and can be a lot harder to evict someone who doesn’t have a lease agreement, current and pays rent on time and doesn’t have anything else they can hold against them. It’s just a matter of if someone wants to fight it.

I’m one though that if I was her, I would be currently looking for another place to live and reporting at the same time. I wouldn’t want to deal with the hard ship. Because even though they can’t “do anything”, you take a toe out of the contract and your gone. And they will be watching like a hawk.
