They're Cooking A Silkie On Food Network For Halloween...

I just watched that part of the show. It was a little creepy.

Very interesting information .... thanks!

I love my home grown meat, and I am gonna try Silkie meat one of these days. Mama Silkie has 7 blue babies right now, and I'm thinking I will likely get more roos than I want. So, maybe by spring I can give it a try.

hmmmm I have this roo I was thinking of getting rid of.

I could happen. Silkie dinner anyone>

Going to have to rename him after an old roo...."n'Dumplings!"

Do they taste any different?
I found out that silkies were an actual breed several years ago when I was watching a food show host talk on a late night program. I looked up what Black Bone Chicken was, found the breed, then promptly had to have one. It took a few years but I have some now.

I recently went to a Halloween type camp out that some new friends hold and they apparently have an odd food every year. This year was squirrel and most everyone tried it (tastes a lot like chicken) so I started thinking about finding some silkies to take up there next year. In researching how to cook the birds all I have found is soups and stews, although I did run across a suggestion of Coque a Vin. All the articles I have found about it says the meat is either tough and gamey or sweet and tender, so I'm guessing it's a matter of the birds age and how it's cooked that factors in the most. All descriptions of it cooked have said the skin stays black, the meat is more like a dark beige and the bones are darker than average.

The show was Chopped the episode was called Fright Bites. I can't find any video of it online, but Food networks show schedule says it will re-air the 22nd at 8pm.
