They're Here!

You should see the utube of dirty jobs at the Murry McMurry Hatchery. Those little biddies go through a heck of a day when they hatch and get shipped. My Momma Dot got a couple of her chicks good just scratching and kicking and they went a flying. Do you remember webelos wobble but they don't fall down. Chickens for the most part are like that. They are like living timex watches and just keep going most of the time.

Add a teaspoon of Apple Cidar Vinager to their water and you will not have to worry about pasty butt. Yes you will see pasty butt sometimes at the feed stores. Neither my first nor my second batch of chicks had it and neither did my broody batch. Just keep their water cool and fresh, the temp right for the week you are on (it goes down 5 degrees each week) and feed them chick crumbles and you will be alright.

And um - Just where are the pictures? Hmmmmm???? Don't be keeping us waiting now!!!!! You holding out on all that cuteness!

from Ohio CONGRATS on the arrival of your chicks! Sorry the one little chick had such a ruff start, you & your daughter got a scare. Even if one turned out to be a roo, that wouldn't be so bad, roo's are kinda handsome, and help guard your girls. I hope you don't have fussy complaining neighbors! Some roos crow as early as 5 AM. Hope you have neighbors that will appreciate a bit of country living without having to do any of the chores.

Whillo, we have not yet named anyone of of the notorious MPC 7, the only chicks we have with names so far are our four mystery sex silkies...Abby Blue Comb, Shadow, Sonic and Sophie. I am waiting until I can accurately sex our four BO chicks, at which time I will rehhome all but one pullet, and lastly I am picking up three or four new BLRW chicks on the 21st and plan to do the same with them.

Our flock in the end (barring any deaths) will be a Welsummer Roo, 2 Welsummer hens, 1 BO hen, 1 BR hen, 1 BA hen, 1 Australorpe hen, 1 EE hen, 1 BLRW hen, and 4 silkies (sex yet to be determined).

Thankyou for your replies. Hadn't read of the pasty butt preventative before...back to the grocery store for me!

I know Caroline! I've seen those movies where they show the chicks tumbling around. I see them locking the chickens up in tight little cages their whole lives and they STILL lay eggs! I can't believe that they can go through so much stress and still function. Awful. Yet I'm looking at them like delicate little creatures and looking for my kid gloves.

Oh Gage, I couldn't go too long without names. I name my TREES, so little fuzzy butts must have identies. I wouldn't be surprised if the names change a bit. Bit... Betty White turned into Bitty White because she acts a bit like an old bitty to the others sometimes.
MareeZoCool, I would LOVE to have a rooster. I have ALREADY been told by two new neighbors though, that we definitely DON'T want roosters and then they gave me the stink-eye. We aren't out on the vineyard yet (still waiting on that ONE paper to be worked out and then we build!) but we've been busy getting to know people. We have 12 acres to play with, but it's amazing how sound travels across a vineyard. We can hear the people "next door" talking in their front yard in normal voices. I think the last thing I need is to move into a new neighborhood with nature's alarm clock. That's why I'm so scared that I might have a boy in the bunch. I already love them all and to part with one (more) will kill me, especially after I've raised him.

Have to take dear daughter to visit her college today in adjacent town. I have to leave the babies!! I'm not too happy about that. Glad I have the guest room to lock them in so won't have to worry about Kitty, but then there's those hours away from the comforting peep.

Caroline, did they come???
