THEY'RE MOVING!!!!!

Hi Guys,
We are fine - the fires are much farther south. It's very scarey what's happening down there - I really feel for those poor people.

I candled on day 18 and 6 of the Serama were doing great. Somewhere between then and day 21 they all died. I have no idea why - the incubator readings were perfect. My best guess is that the chicks weren't strong enough to make it. The other thing is that I have heard that Serama are very hard to hatch, so maybe that's it????? I am very disappointed, to say the least. Fortunately I have more eggs coming next week - this time they are more Cuckoo Marans and Blue Orps from a really nice guy on eggbid (why oh why did I tell Cyn to wait and send me some of her eggs in the spring????).

I'm going to try to crack the failed eggs open tonight and see if I can tell anything from looking at the embryos.

Hopefully I will have good news and pics in about 3 1/2 weeks.

Mine are due to hatch anyday!! today is day 19.. I took them out of the turner at day 17 and upped the humidity.. so we will see if we have any better luck..
I also have several Serama eggs in the bator from our hens, it might make a differance them not being shipped??

Hey, Lori, is that nice guy on Eggbid Johnny Cox? Skye came from his stock. He is a nice guy. Out of the 12 eggs I got from him, 9 made it past the first candling and in the end two hatched, one being a splash cockerel. I noticed during candling that many were very porous and that's probably why the low rate on the Blue Orps in that batch. Candle them when you get them to check porosity.

I just hatched eggs from the guy named Jim Cox on egg bid. He was very nice and his birds are turning out great so far. They are seven days so their going to look cute no matter what lol. The hatch was good to considering they came from WV to Washington state about 65% give or take. I had a few dead in shell but who knows caused that? Good luck with you next birds.

Oh, sorry, it is Jimmy Cox, not Johnny. Skye is beautiful and I'm completely satisfied with her. Nothing wrong with his birds at all, just I think my particular batch was porous. I know there isn't much he can do about that and sometimes they hatch in spite of it, depending on how bad it is. Not too many people here you can get Blue Orps from and he's one of the few who consistently sells the eggs and the chicks.

Ebay can be scary unless you know someone who has bought from them before.. I bought cochin eggs off ebay and 3 out of 12 hatched and they are barred rock chicks!! LOL

He wasn't at all nice to me

Sorry to hear that. I didn't see what happened, but I saw EweSheep posted something for you on the EZBoard BYC related to that. In any case, there aren't many you can get Blue Orps from and I've had a hard time trying to hatch pullets so I could help others enjoy hatching theirs.
Hey, Denna, maybe those are some of the BARRED ROCK COCHINS. My feedstore, when they have Barred Cochins to sell, always puts up a sign that says, "BARRED ROCK COCHINS", LOL. They make up breeds sometimes, I think, because they think it makes no difference to whoever is buying the chickens. Like the time the owner called a Porcelain D'Uccle a "Bearded Cochin".

Cynthia, could you point me in the right direction of that message from Ewesheep..I don't check that board and I couldn't find it by searching.
