They're pipping!!

Hey Judy, Good for you. It sounds like an interesting group. I have had my Buff Silkie Roo and RIR together long enough for fertile eggs. I did hatch a couple and they were very nice. I don't have pictures for some reason.

Keep us posted,

I got 11 hatched, and about 15 more pipped. So far, so good. LOL Maybe a lot more will pop out tonight. Boy, it takes a long time between the pip and the hatch, doesn't it?

Judy, are you busy tending to a bunch of chicks? I would love to see a pic of that Silkie cross!

Lynn, well, I have either 26 or 27 chicks, and I can't figure out which one the leghorn/silkie cross is!?! I haven't looked at them closely. Last night before bed, there were 10 babies stumbling around over the other eggs, hollering loudly, and humidity was 95 (caused by the poor little wet things in there) and my chicks have never dried off in the bator for some reason, like other peoples seem to. Mine dry off wonderfully in the brooder. So I risked grabbing them out thru one of the removable glass windows. The shell from the Silkie cross was empty, so he/she was one of them. Thought I would figure it out this morning. Now, this morning, I have woke up with my 3rd attack of my lifetime of inner ear trouble. (Wonderful--dizzy as a hoot owl.) Took one of the Meclizine the Dr. gave me last time, and felt better in a little while. There were SCADS of babies in the bator now, and humidity still way up there, so I grabbed babies, putting them in a bowl, and headed to the nice, warm brooder in the attached garage. As I took them out, I counted 16. As I put them in the brooder, I counted 17. ?? Figured I could tell the half Silkie by 5 toes, hopefully. In this last 16 or 17, there was one huge black chick with 5 toes and a little fuzz down his legs. Couldn't be the Silkie, as he was hatched last night. I had about half of the eggs in the bator pure RIR, and the other half (couple dozen of them) of mixed eggs from a young man in a nearby town. Not sure what all I have from him. Are Langshans big and black and have 5 toes? Anyway, now there is another hatched in the bator, and it is just now (4 p.m. yesterday thru 4 p.m. today) day 21, so more may hatch.
Feeling sort of crummy, I may not get pics taken today, but sure will soon. And will try to figure out what the Silkie cross is.
Gads, sorry about the length of this epistle. If you are still with me, thanks for the interest. Oh, should mention, when I set these eggs, 3 of my 4 silkie hens were broody, so as my neighbor with the RIR's laid, I stuck 6 eggs each under my 3 silkies. Thought they may as well be earning their keep. They will be a couple days behind. It's been cold here--below freezing some--so they may not have any success, but if they get any, I will add them to my ones in the brooder. Whew. LOL
