Had this problem too, it solved itself when I just continued taking eggs out of the nest box HOWEVER, if you’re still having this problem I’ve seen success in baiting these egg eating chickens with fake wooden eggs. These chickens will try and eat these fake eggs and realize they can’t eat them. Eventually, maybe a week, they’ll lose interest in trying to eat eggs in general since now they associate egg eating with these uneatable wooden eggs. I’m sure diet CAN play a role, but if you feel like you’re feeding them properly then sometimes chickens will just be chickens. When they learn that this thing = food, they will eat it. You have to unteach this behavior, however it was learned. Maybe some chicken cracked an egg and realized there’s something delicious inside, I’m not sure! Whatever the case may be, maybe you’ll have some luck unteaching this behavior. Good luck on whatever you decide to do!In the last 4 days we were suddenly down to 1 egg a day (from 5).
This morning when hubby went out for morning release he caught the little buggers eating eggs.
It's our 1st experience with this behavior.
Any thoughts?
ps..yes they get oyster shell supplements
