Hi,
I have two chickens that are hens, and I've noticed that when I crack their egg yolks they're very thick. The yolk is hard to break away from the fork, and is difficult to mix. What does this mean? Thank you.

Welcome to BYC! :frow

How old are your hens and is this a new development?

What you describe.. at least initially, just sounds like the difference between fresh eggs and store bought old ones.

On the flip side of things.. very old eggs will experience thickening due to evaporation.. usually they are very easy to bust.

See this link for some interesting and valuable information on how eggs are formed and the possibilities of what could go awry and some *possible* causes..

Hi thank you for responding. I’m unsure of how old they are I’d guesstimate about 2 years old.

Are you new to chickens or have you had them for awhile and the thicker yolk is a new recent development? Egg yolks from truly farm fresh eggs tend to be thicker than store bought. Also the temperature they are stored at can cause a thicker yolk. I have become so used to my chicken's eggs that when I picked some "farm fresh" eggs from the grocery store I kept breaking the yolks when cracking the eggs because they are so much thinner and runnier than the fresh eggs.
