I have five hens and, over the past two weeks, one of them has been laying thin-shelled eggs. None of them appear to be sick, all of them eat well, and I have no idea which one it is.

I feed them a laying mix and food from the kitchen. It hasn't been very hot yet and they do have a shady pen. They are approximately two years old. My husband has been feeding them lately and I just found out he isn't adding grit to their food. Could that effect just one of the hens?

Note: The thin-shelled eggs are always covered in calcium deposits, which none of the others have. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Try eliminating all food from the kitchen. Add oyster shell free choice. I have one that lays bumpy/rough shell eggs regularly.

'Grit' as in oyster shells or digestive granite grit?
Neither should be put directly in feed but offered in a separate dish/feeder.

If 5 hens are eating the same diet and only 1 is laying funky eggs....
.....it's the hen, not the diet.
Some birds just don't process nutrients properly, could be ill, stressed for numerous reasons, or have a glitch in the system....in this case the shell gland(uterus) is not functioning properly.
It's very hard to diagnose what is the root of the problem in a single bird.
