Hello, members of this forum!
I've being reading this forum for almost 5 years. Since I got my first chickens. It was very helpful and informative. Thanks you all!
This is my first thread. I'm really can't find a solution for this problem
So couple of years ago I noticed that the eggshells of my chicken's eggs became kind of thin, sometimes cracked. I was thinking it's due to the age of my chickens, since they were about 3 y.o. We had 5 layers and eventually our flock shrink to two.
So last July we got a brand new 12 beautiful chicks.
Starting last fall they become layers. And almost from the beginning the eggshells wasn't as good as 5 years ago when my first chickens started laying.
I was trying different feed, nothing worked. currently they have a Costco organic layer feed. I give them crushed eggshells and there is always a crushed oyster shell available.
No treats except some mealworms. They are free range most of the day at they yard.
The only thing I can think of-it's our water that come from the well. We had that well all the time and my first chickens drink it too and had a good thick eggshells, until
something happen and since then they never had nice eggshells on their eggs.
And now same thing happening with this young lades. Usually 2 out of 10 eggs have some cracks and the rest are ok,but I can tell it's not hard enough, pretty thin.
So can that water really be a problem? I know that our water has a lot of minerals, but other than that it's ok.
Or what else could cause it? I tried to give them bottled water for a week, didn't see much difference, but maybe week is not enough?
Sorry for a long thread,guys
