Thin shells

today my hen has laied a hard shelled egg but she has pecked at the egg and made a fine crack . when she laid a thin shelled egg before that broke she had eaten some of the egg. i have heard of hens doing this but why do they eat their own eggs ???
Sometimes they want protein, and other times they do it because it tastes good. I feed my chickens their eggs. If there are ten eggs that day, I give them like two. I would give them more, but my family wants to eat them. I just toss them on the ground and they love it. So, I am not the one to tel you how to break an egg eater, because I am of the mindset that they lay the egg, and it is theirs, so they can do what they want with it. Typically mine do not eat their eggs unless I give it to them anyways.

Another idea: Do they have access to fresh, clean water all the time? One time my hens went without water for about a half a day and they laid thin shelled eggs for about two weeks after that. Lesson well learned. Always make sure they have water!

I didnt think of feeding them their eggs as I thought it would be like feeding them chicken !
I read on here to cook scrambled eggs with crushed up egg shell in it for them so i am going to try that today.......keep you posted

Chickens are cannibals. They love chicken and eggs. Eggs especially are very good for them! Just always make sure they are cooked.
