Things I have learned since getting chickens...

Don't feed them Potato peels. I've read that they contain compounds that can be poisonous to chickens. I do feed mine lettuce almost every day and fresh corn when I can get it. After I cut the grass I'll let them out and they go crazy. They love the clumps of cuttings the mower leaves behind sometimes when it hits a high patch of grass. Right now my fall garden is providing all I need for us and the gals. They're happy chickens and I'm getting 18-19 big old brown ones from 19 Gold Comets almost every day.

I feed mine Potato peels 1-2 times a week. Green potato peels are the ones that are toxic to them not your regular potato peelings!

Just a couple things...

Don't EVER put eggs in your pocket....left one in a jacket pocket, in the closet......unpleasant suprise after oh bout 2 months...LOL....

Don't spend more time cleaning coop then house....leads to an unhappy wife. LOL...bout a week ago she spent morning with her mom, and came home to me windexing windows of coop (just because they were "to dusty" LOL)....and I got "I KNOW the windows in the house are next RIGHT?!?!?!" so needless to say coop windows are spotless, and house windows still have dog and cat nose prints on them...LOLOLOL...ran out of windex....

a secure, well built coop and run are INVALUABLE to peace of mind.....

When a chicken is looking sideways at the freckles on your nose, it means you are too close and you need to distance yourself quickly before they decide to taste them! Ouch!!

I've learned that one of the most precious things I'll ever see is a banty cochin rooster with a chick getting a piggy back ride down the coop ramp. One of those times I so wish I'd had my camera.

Toletiquesbysam is correct. I stand corrected in regards to the potato peels. It is the green ones that can be poisonous. But regardless, my nineteen Gold Comets are just pigs with feathers and they'll eat almost anything. Except maybe bananas. Just don't like them for some reason.

I have learned my chickens find bananas intimidating.
