Things That Chicken Eat That Surprised You

My chickens best treat is Hot Dogs

My chickens won't eat carrots, but will eat the greens, IF I cut them up for them. LOL

They don't eat mice or snakes. I WISH they would eat those two things. Living in the sticks I have A LOT of both hanging around. One 4 foot black snake shortened my life when it crawled across the lawn. (Hit it with a brick, then cut it's head off. Chickens STILL wanted nothing to do with it)

This made me laugh... I thought there was something wrong with my chickens when they wouldn't eat carrots at all... I tried cooked, grated, etc... other people in the area had told me their chickens eat carrots. I haven't tried green beans yet, ha!
I find them eating dog poop very disgusting.... of course, the dogs are eating the chicken poop, too... so... fair trade, I guess.
I stayed away and went back in the house when I saw them fighting over a new, naked baby bird that fell out of a nest. I believe it was dead already and the cat had knocked down the nest.
I gave them the left over enchiladas last week... they picked all the sauce drenched tortillas off the meat first, and ate the meat last.
Have also seen them pull silicone caulking from a wall to eat it, and peck off bits of hard plastic as well. Found a small stick in their poop... it's a wonder that chicken is still alive, whoever it was.

This was a fun thread to read, thanks everyone.

They really do eat pretty much anything - though at the most surprising times they will decide to get picky on you. I watched one of our buff orpingtons swallow about an 8 inch snake .... I was suprised at that at the time. FOr whatever reason ours have decided that mice are not edible and won't even try a dead one. Not that I am complaining ... just would be nice if someone would help out a little around the place and take care of the mice, after all they get free food and board for their entire lives - couldn't they at least try to scare the little buggers that are always devouring large quanities of their food!

a tiny piece of plastic that I was afraid would kill her.

One thing that my chickens don't eat is, Surprisingly, worms! When I give them one, they peck at it then just let it fall on the ground. Weird huh?

I had a friend ask if I fed my chickens a strictly vegetarian diet. She wasn't amused when I laughed out loud for a good.long time.

That is funny cause mine eat grated carrots (raw)and love them! They even have a little orange in their poop sometimes, I give them to my dogs as treats, and I grat a few of them sometimes. We use raw baby carrots as dog treat instead of bought ones from the store.
