Things You Wish You Would Have Known?

@ChickenJesus I have been downsized. A coon took all 8 chicks before I got down to do the final lock up. More predator proofing in the middle run. Glad that I have a camera inside the coop, we actually saw it go past the window last night.

I wish I had known to set a reminder to go down to the runs. I got distracted, they paid the price.

I feel your pain :(

I wish I had known that If I had to leave the chickens in the coop run to have secured the door better in open. I had a stick propping it open so that the coop had cross breezes but the chickens couldn't get out into the run. When I returned home after church, I came to find the doors were closed and I lost the whole flock due to heat stroke. Still kicking myself over that one.

Oh and good fences. My crappy fences did not keep my wacko neighbor and his dog out of my yard.
Thankfully he and his dog are gone now.

I am so sorry! How could he do all of them? My Lord? Ones bad enough.

Many predators can easily dispatch large numbers of chicks, not to mention full grown chickens, in short order. At night weasels, mink, fishers and raccoons will kill multiple birds, if not all.

I would only consider the under two pound chickens. I would first have air cleaners, which we have now. I suppose since they hate water you cant mist. But I would just use covered dog ex pen for out time to keep him safe. On rainy bad days I would make a special terrarium for him to play in and throw in some live crickets. I would have airline crate with roost for coop. I mean with their size, you could have Roo plus two girls. For social out time they would get nappie or towel.

My aunt in CA had two in/out hens. Door to kitchen stayed open for them and dogs. They were in garden or in kitchen on old chair with sheet under it, and they slept inside at night. They both died of old age and she was upset.

We all learn, even when it is the hard way. Have you tried to make a screen door that with hardware cloth? I have a resin shed that has thin vinyl windows. In the summer It take the plastic stuff out, put back the decorative panels, and have attached hardware cloth across the windows inside the coop. Anything that is open is covered with hardware cloth, except the automatic door.

Oh no, I'm so sorry. :(

I wish I'd known how to grow a "tougher skin" to deal with the upsets that happen not just to us, but to others we relate to online. It's like an online family and every loss is felt. :(
The online BYC family is really the best support system there is!

The chicks were outside the main coop in a dog house. They were inside a run, but I needed to close the door. Raccoons are horrid - they kill everything for the fun of it. Well, maybe not fun, but that
Please forgive me. I am such a dunce, I posted these comments and pictures to wrong thread. Lisa
I love seeing those pictures!

Happens to us all, don't worry
