Think our oldest is drinking cough syrup...

Yes, she is saying it at bedtime. She is saying that she can't fall asleep.

However, I do remember a time of her spilling a bottle (which made no sense because that particular time she didn't ask for it) and I like clean carpets. So she quickly told me she dropped it, cuz one of my little ones saw it, and told me that she cleaned it up. There is a stain now on my carpet from it and I questioned it then, as to why it was open...but never went any further with it and chalked it up to an accident. Didn't realize until the following morning that my carpet was stained. And that it was liquid cough syrup. I just though it was a pkg. of allergy pills. She said she "dropped it and cleaned it up"--no reason for me to think it was liquid...

I guess I just wasn't paying enough
attention.........

Do you have any indications that she's interested in drinking the cough syrup to "zone out"?

Forgive me for not going back and re-reading the thread.

If she's saying it's because she can't sleep...

I suggest letting her have 2 pills of off-brand Benadryl allergy medicine. That'll knock her rear DOWN in 30 minutes flat.

I didn't read all the posts but:

I vaguely remember when I was a kid (about 5 or 6) I drank frequent sips from a giant Vicks 44 bottle. Back then they used to come in 18 oz glass bottle. I must have gotten sick 'cause my Mom took me to the doctor. I seem to remember I just really liked the taste and kept going back for a sip. Kinda like a pack of your favorite cookies that you don't want to eat but they keep calling you and you just take one here and there - then suddenly they're all gone.

Anyway, maybe she's just gotten used to the stuff. I think it's addictive.

That is my thought too. In which case she needs to see the pediatrition ASAP to figure out the cause.

Though, when I was little (five or six), I used to tell my grandmother I didn't feel good, b/c she was the only one that had the ORANGE Triaminic stuff, and I really really liked it and she'd give me a spoonful.

I am by no means a drug addict today, I've never tried anything stronger than alcohol and ciggies (and I don't even smoke now, and have MAYBE one fufu girlie drink a month!), and no one ever staged an "intervention" for me. Sometimes I think people overreact to simply solved issues. But that's just me.

Whats the difference (Niquil vs Benedryl) you are still drugging the girl???? If you gave my dd 2 pills of off brand Benadryl she would be bouncing off the walls instead of sleeping. IF not being able to sleep is the case, i would suggest the family doctor.

I would not get to excited about it. My husband and i both when we get a cold, run for the nyquil and take entirely way to much of it. You sleep like a baby and it really controls the symptons of the cold. You do have to kinda ween yourself off of the stuff, like Afrin. She has just noticed that it zonks her out and she sleeps thru the night. Just keep the stuff under lock and key and let her know that it can cause liver damage and even heart damage.

Want to fall alseep? Have her read a book, shewont make it to page 3.

I didn't read all the posts, but I must say I would be very, very concerned if I suspected my child was using anything. If she can't sleep, she is either really upset about something or she isn't getting enough exercise. I would talk to her about drugs & the damage they can do, as well...
