Now mind you, I know very little about genetics or that type of work but I need to ask you
smart people to look at this female Bantam Cochin chick. Of course I could wait and watch
until she grows up, but I am confused. She is 1 month old and wonder why the flip feathers...?

Above is close up, note the wing feather "flip".

This over the top of her, showing the flips that these feathers give.

Here she is in the upper left hand corner, her brother that is the black chick that is eating.

The two birds on the right are the parents.

I welcome your opinion and thank you !!!!

That looks like frizzle feathering but it is odd because usually they all flip forward on both sides and it looks like that isn't happening in this baby. I do get frizzles now and again that a few flip a little initially then later they are straight feathered with really loose feathering. I'm not a huge expert on frizzles though..just started in them last year. Maybe someone more experienced will have some ideas. I do know that all you need to get frizzle is one gene, not sure if a hidden frizzle gene is something that happens.

Windchyme, Thank you for answering, the hen she comes from actually has loose feathers and kinda 1/2 curl. Duh, maybe she was part frizzle at some point in the lineage.
Mother is from Karl Rau line and father is 1/2 Rau line. I'm excited to imagine that between the feathers and poor Scooter taking diggers, that they actually reproduced! LOL
Thanks a lot!

I wanted to ask the same thing as well. I have a sebright that had this. Now she/he is feathering out and doesn't have it at this moment. i am interested to see what the experts say as well.

I'll be darned. Maybe its just the way their feathers are until first moult. The other 3 that looked like this chick in question apparently have the same type feather issues.
Hmmm, thanks for your imput rodriguezpoultry!

I have or had 4 frizzle chicks. Those chicks look just like they did. They got more frizzley as they grew. But, one doesn't got the frizzles. The ones that got the friz showed it quite early but didn't get the complete frizzles until the grew up more. Plus, seems to me there are degrees of friz and the more the better. I say GO FRIZZLES!
