Thinking about amputating chicks leg... yes or no...

Well I really see both sides of this issue. I would want to cull or raise it for a broiler. Would not keep it. Having said all that I am a softy and could not do the actual killing myself. I would like to simply say that I support the OP's choice no matter what and I am sorry if you did not get the advice you wanted. Hope it all works out for you and your chick!

Personal and emotional issues aside culling is the best for this circumstance and here is why: contaminates the gene pool, breeds inferiority, the bird will usually have poor performance and the list goes on from a breeders point of view. If you are having trouble deciding on moral grounds there is no definitive answer as that is purely relative to the owner. It is like asking someone what do you want for dinner? You will get a different answer every time with no real basis to support the answer as it will be based on choice. My personal opinion is what good is a one legged chicken especially in an ***kicking contest.

"culled" is not a synonym with "killed"... you can "cull" something and merely find it a pet only (and have it neutered) home. "Culling" is merely taking that animal out of the breeding population.

When it comes to sickness/weakness... generally if you are "culling" then you are killing it. But it is important to understand that the two words are not the same 100% of the time.

When I read your first sentence, it made sense. Then I read your second and got confused again. So the worse off they are, then they are killed? I'm hoping that a twisted tail doesn't result in that. So what is everyone referring to in this post with the gimpy chick? Someone mentioned something about breeding - Would that equal killing?

I think what the person is saying is culling has 2 different meanings and purposes. A diseased bird is culled by killing it to stop potential spread of disease and/or suffering. The other culling is simply removing the bird from the breeding use to a pet or other non-lethal status. The OP was originally asking about amputation mainly and that of course would be cruel as a chicken would most likely suffer a poor quality of life not being able to scratch and would need special care that would not be practical by most reasonable thinking.

They have limbs amputated with painkillers and would probably put out during the surgery, the chances of someone taking a small chick that may or may not make it are slim. I would either cull or leave it be, amputating cause more pain then its worth.

If its happy and not showing signs of pain.. Why would you cull it? Wow.

Because its quality of life later probably wont be as good as a chicken with a normal leg, it could even be in pain right now and not be showing it
