Thinking about Backyard Chickens!

Since so many have posted on here, I have a question: what is a good age to start with? From what I've read I think it's more than safe to say I'd like to avoid baby chicks, but from there I don't understand the different age groups and how difficult they are. We definitely want chickens that can and will eventually lay eggs. Thanks in advance!
