Here's another question. I live in Northern Indiana, where the winters can be quite cold and snowy. I'm thinking of building a chicken tractor for use outdoors during the nice weather, to move around the place. Would it work to house them in a modified horse stall (approx. 12' x 12') during the winter? I could make some laying boxes to put in there, and fill it with wood shavings (like I do for the horses). The barn is insulated, the stall has one small outside window in it, and the top half of one wall is open to the inside aisle of the barn, but protected by bars. I could add lighting on a timer. Would the chickens suffer from not being outside during the winter?
