Thinking About Getting Dairy Goats

So may project for next summer (dh will kill me if I add anymore livestock this year) is to get goats next summer and put them in with my llamas. I'd like to get dairy goats. Which dairy breeds produce milk with the lowest butterfat? I'm also wondering if I should get 2 does or if I should add a buck to the mix? Thanks for your help.

I have Nigerian Dwarf goats and a La Mancha. The La Mancha is a whether i only mention him because, Ive heard that La Mancha's have great temperaments and he definitely does so if that is a factor for you than you might want a La Mancha. I haven't milked my Nigees yet, but they are supposed to give up to a quart a piece every day? If size is a factor i would go with the Nigees because, Pygmies are known to be escape artists and are hard to keep in a pen. I hope i helped! (I probably didn't) Lol.

Thanks for the advice! I've started raising Nigerian Dwarf goats and love them. They give just enough milk for my family and the milk tastes delicious. I had LaManchas for a while, but I like the smaller breeds. I can transport them easily, and they have great personalities. I have 4 does, 3 bucklings, and a whether.

Thats great! Yea i do love their personalities, they are really a trip aren't they! I have a whether, two does and two bucks. The whether is a La Mancha and the rest are Nigees!

Nigerians are great(I have 2) but above she mentioned she didn't want a high butterfat. In that case Saanens are good, they produce a lot of milk with very low butterfat, no goaty flavor whatsoever.

Goaty flavor? Does Nigee's milk have that? Mine arent producing yet so i was just wandering.

No nigerians have great flavor. Maybe even too rich! They have a 7-10% butterfat content, so they are sure to taste great. There are only a couple breeds that have goaty flavor but Nigerians are not one of them.
