Thinking About Getting Ducks, Looking For Advice Please!

@QuackSpeak - Well, two of every color Metzer's had. So 2 Fawn/White, 2 Black, 2 Blue, and 2 Chocolate.

Ew, lol. But they'd probably like it. I could take them around my park but people let their dogs run loose :/ Literally right behind my house there's a huge ditch that is so big it may as well be a pond. Imagine the mosquitoes! There's a pair of wild mallards and a Heron that visit it frequently. It's home to some lovely bull frogs and red-bellied turtles. However, there are also snapping turtles in it :( I've never actually seen a large one but I have seen baby ones so Mr. and Mrs. Snapper are probably in there somewhere.

Fun fact, I'm the neighborhood turtle watch lol. So when one of the babies crawl into someone's yard and the children are trying to play with it, I'm the person they call to take it back to the water.

. Only four days left..

There are some of these nature, foresty places that have swamps, or small ponds. We might take them there, too. Although, we'd have to drive them there, which I'm sure we could do with a dog crate or something. But dogs still concern me.

Your pond/ditch sounds cool! If only there were no snapping turtles

. They can do horrible things to duckies. But the wildlife sounds really cool (Except for the mosquitos, lol). Love that you're the turtle watch! I remember once we found a baby snapping turtle in the parking lot at my friend's bday party.. I picked him up and we put him in a cup and took him back to the water. That is the extent of my turtle watch experience *Bows twice*

@QuackSpeak - Oh I will :)

Yeah, it's kind of difficult, but don't let that stop you! You might get lucky and be there when no one else is.

It is very cool, I can watch everything right from my bedroom window. Yeah it would be the perfect place for the ducklings to play if it weren't for the snappers. Haha it's just something I adopted, none of the parents would go near them so someone had to do it, right? Otherwise the kids would probably be missing some fingers by now. That's good you helped the little guy, it was probably so scared being in the middle of everything.

The place I'm talking about is pretty secluded...

I have a forest behind my house. There are a bunch of squirrels and chipmunks and birds; plus I can go through the woods to my friend's house. But unfortunately, the woods is also home to some predators. We never see them in the daylight or in person, but my dad set up a game camera a while ago, and we saw possums, fox, raccoons. Sigh. The duck pen has to be really fortified.

@QuackSpeak - Same here, there is a thin line of trees, then the ditch, and then a forest. I've got all those predators too, plus hawks, owls, and eagles. Years ago, we fed stray cats in our porch and so we had a possum that would come out at night for the cat food. There were also raccoons coming over too, but we never saw them, just their footprints. I always hear owls and foxes out there, so I know they're there. And while walking in the woods I've seen a hawk. Good times.

Yet another reason I wanted a small number of ducks, that way I could keep them as house ducks and I wouldn't need to worry about predators so much.

Edit: I forgot to mention I broke down and bought some drawer liner to go over the wire on my Stay-Dry Platform. I'm not paranoid about bumblefoot or anything :b

So are your ducks going to be outside then?

Haha! Well, better safe than sorry <That phrase drives me nuts. But it's true>.

I bought a tray to put the water bowl in today, and also a thermometer and another C-Clamp. Still need Brewer's Yeast. We went to the P.O. and talked to a lady there. It was pretty funny! She thought that was cute, but unfortunately, couldn't tell us what time they'll call at. She said that they normally call 'pretty early'... I hope before school starts!

@QuackSpeak - Yes, once they are old enough :) I mean, technically not all eight are mine, some are my grandma's. I might decide to only keep two to three for myself, who knows. Right now, the plan is four for grandma and four for me.

Great, you're getting ready! Yeah, I'm sure our PO is going to call way before the usual time we get up lol. So we'll be a bunch of zombies going to the PO. That's ok though, it will be worth it! And yeah, my fingers are crossed for you!

Sounds like a plan!

I normally get up at 6:00. I am always a zombie, lol! Though if they call at five, I won't complain

@QuackSpeak - Oh yeah, I guess you do get up early with school and all.

Tomorrow our little doodles will be shipped! That two weeks flew by, here's hoping they have a safe trip!
