Thinking About Getting Ducks, Looking For Advice Please!

@QuackSpeak - Oh yeah, it's getting hard to wait.

I talked to my grandma today, she is willing to get 10 to counter the small box fee! She's even willing to breed them in the future...Oh lord. I wasn't sure I wanted to take on that sort of thing yet. I'm gonna try and talk her down to 6 (three for each of us). I think that number is much more manageable.

Yeah, me too! My advice to you: Get different breeds. Like maybe a Cayuga, Welsh Harlequin, Buff, Blue Swedish, Black Swedish, Pekin. That way, you can tell them apart for easy bonding. I could tell my two ducks apart easily, but others had trouble. I knew who they were by the slight difference in plumage and size, their personalities, and reactions. However, adding even one more duck to the mix would have made it difficult to tell them all apart! And it's easier to bond with a small group of ducks whom you can tell apart than ten of the same.

I got 10 runner ducks. 2 of each color and 4 fawn and white. I can tell them apart easily.
And if your grama is considering getting diff breeds make sure its not a large breed drake with a small runner duck.

Well guess what, the deed is done...8 runner ducklings later.

We got 2 fawn/white, 2 black, 2 blue, and 2 chocolate. One of the chocolates is a male, the rest are female. All from Metzers.

We figured one male and (as sad as it would be) if we lost him we just wouldn't have babies. And maybe if we happen to sell eggs/babies it would just help with the cost of keeping them. However it's not like that's big on our to do list. We just want to have fun :)

We picked April 3rd as our shipping date so I'm expecting to become a momma duck around the 5th! :)

For the record, i find runners to be the most ENDEARING breed of duck ever. My blue runner was by far the friendliest, and would follow me around everywhere :love

@TroyerGal - Thanks for that, I'm super excited for my babies to get here :)

@Ducks4us - Me too, the hard part now is waiting two weeks for them to get here.

Tomorrow I'll go out and buy the things I need to brood them.

I like your choices!
And April 3 is the date we're trying to change it to!
