when the suns out around here and its nice and warm, the bugs are out in full force in my yard. I watch my runners lower they're necks like a predator stalking prey and they chase and eat the bugs one by one. its great and i'd say yes they are good for pest and bug control. but they will damage gardens harshly and they lay alot of eggs so i hope you like duck eggs! i eat them, i dont thnk they taste much different than a chicken egg. they need lots of water too, goodd luck have fun. check feet too for bumblefoot. they will love you if you bring them greens! the usual ducky quacky stuff!

Our runner don't get many beetles, but the free range chickens go nuts over them.
Weird...my chickens didn't seem to eat many of them.
I've heard scarab beetles taste bad and why alot of birds don't eat them.
You never see wild birds going after them.
I just got three runner ducks and love them! They are extremely friendly and sit on my lap and watch tv with me - the way they walk is hilarious as well - they're instant mood improvers as you can't help but smile when they walk. They're 2.5 weeks old now.
To further convince you, here's a video I made of them swimming when they were one week old:

What a cute video. I giggled and "awwwed" the whole time. To precious.
I'm getting 4 runners in June... do they eat wasps? That would be so great if they did. No slug problem here, too dry, but we do get more wasps then we'd care to have... 4000+ more than we'd care to have.
My Runners eat japanese beetles like crazy. We had a SERIOUS jap beetle problem here when we moved in--they'd cover every green surface in the yard for about two months, breeding like nuts. Then I got ducks. Next season: nothin'. Well, one or two, occasionally--presumably strays from somewhere else. The ducks eat the grubs out of the ground as well as the adult beetles, so they wipe them out completely. At least, mine have.
