we live on 54 acres on the edge of the ocala national forest, heavily wooded of course. They also are out from sun up till around sun set, they could go anywhere they want, but they hang around the front 5 acres around the house where the driveway comes in. They do know our vehicles, they prefer his truck to mine because the lower part of his bumper is chrome and mine is painted to match the truck. I haven't figured out if they are looking at themselves, or if they think its a new chicken, but its cheap entertainment. We also have 2 dogs a golden retriever and a peekapoo. They keep any predators from approaching. we have a 25X50 garden that we wrapped with 2ft chicken wire and that keeps them out, except occasionally one gets over, but they get freaked out and can't get out, the roo usually throws a fit, then we know its time to go help one out. they like when i weed the garden cause I throw stuff over the little fence and they tear it up. Seems they know if they are patient they will get rewarded. we currently have 18 and my honey thinks we have too many, but he is the one who brought home 9 rhode island red chicks, and he's the one that insisted we get a pair of ducks when the neighbor said they were in at the feed store. then he built them a nice pond.I think he is upset because they have all destroyed his ferns which were beautiful last year before we got the chickens. we cant put chicken wire around all the flower beds, and they would not be happy if they had to stay in their10X20 run all day.
