I have been thinking about moving alot lately for some reason, I think I am just bored with the Inland Northwest. I dislike the -20, 4' of snow with wind winters so I am thinking about moving southeast. I was thinking mid-northern Louisiana or another nice warm Southern state. I dont really like the dry Southwest.

So I want to hear the pros and cons of living down south. What are the wages and average price of a home on acreage in your area? Is there work to be found?

Any former Northerners living in the south have any advice?

I am thinking I will get a job here in WA for about 5 years (since our state has the highest minimum wage) and save it all up for the most part by living with family and just having gas/insurance payments. Then once I get enough saved I think I will start looking for a job and home in a Southeastern state then pack up and head down.

Thanks in advance.

Well, i am from Philly and have lived in Cali. I now live in Florida. It is much cheaper down here and i love it! I bought my house with 3/4 of an acre , 4 bedrooms, 2 baths for 95k. We bought when the market was up. I now see homes with 5 acres for that price....SIGH

That same house up north is 200k and cali 300+

places in mayakka city, FL. 20 min drive to beaches on the gulf and lots of cheap acres~Manatee county, hardee and highlands

Jobs are good for people up north. My hubby had no problem landing a job as a manager. Close to the beaches servers make great money!! IDK, hope that helped~

Oh yeah, the cons....it's hot and muggy...LOL And insurance on homes is expensive but still cheaper then up north.

No state taxes, 50,000 tax credit on homesteads(homes u live in year round) and no inspection on cars...SCORE!!

I've been thinking about moving to tenneesee eventually, It has loads of poultry shows and other country activities if you're in that stuff.. You can also head to Oklahoma, Kentucky, and such where there are more.. And they get paid more than here (MS).. Not to mention MS is just dull and nothing to do here..

Plus everyone from Tennessee always seems like they love it there, and Nashville was rated the friendliest place in the US if i rememebr correctly

OK, so sure, we got a bit more snow than we're used to last winter. But just look at this weather NOW!! Doesn't that make up for it? And chances are good we're not going to see another winter like that for some time. (please God, please, not another winter like last winter!!)

But, if you feel you must go, the go you must I suppose. Just remember what you'd be leaving behind. Some of the friendliest people on earth....four honest seasons....low population densities...Do you really want to take a chance on someplace you've never lived before?

You know the old saying about how the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence...sure...looks good from where you're at right now, but once you get on the other side of that fence you might find the grass isn't all that great and it's loaded with ticks! Just my two cents worth.... As for living anywhere along the Gulf Coast, I have just one word....Hurricanes!

But hey, if you do leave, what are you going to do with your birds? I know a wonderful place just out past Cheney where they could live out their days in peace and harmony, free ranging all day every day, heated coop in the winter, lots of great veggies all summer long!....

I went this month to LA near Shreveport for a week to stay with family - all I can say is BUGS THE SIZE OF YOUR HEAD!!!

(OK - maybe they weren't that big, but I have a bug phobia...)

I live in south GA and have lived several places in Florida. Grew up near Chicago. I'm stuck here.

But if I weren't stuck, I would look at VA, KY, TN, AK, maybe southern WV, the Carolinas, that latitude. I've driven through them all several times and stayed in most of them. This is too hot and humid; I'd prefer just a bit of winter in trade for tolerable summers. A few snowfalls that melt quickly are nothing compared to a genuine Northern winter. LA and AL and MS are no different for climate than here, maybe worse. Plus you get flooding rain and spinoff tornadoes from hurricanes. GA also has a state income tax. Land is pretty reasonable but work can certainly be a problem, depending on your trade, certainly around here and probably in much of the Southeast. That will just take some research. FL was nothing but sun, heat, beaches, sand, and sand gnats, and the roads are awful.

Do your research, get some lit from state websites, check out jobs, and you will find just the right place. You have plenty of time to do it right!

I am a native of Louisiana, born & bred here, lived here over 50 years now & I'd be the first to tell you stay where you are or go somewhere else--If I wasn't living on family land over 100 years old--i'd be somewhere else in a heartbeat. Still holding out hopes that may happen by retirement age. Looking at New Mexico here.
