Thinking about moving...

Haha, that made me chuckle. The last 2 winters have been bad, last years worse than the year before. The tractor died so we had to shovel the long driveway in below zero temps with a strong cold wind, I had pheasants and ducks die from the cold, in Deer Park there was still snow at Easter. Then the dry summers make me have the occasional nose bleed. There isnt much as far as poultry goes up here, its like trying to get blood from a turnip when you try to sell show birds for more than layer/mutt prices. And here in Spokane people are rude and it smells, lol.

The way you said it reminds me of my mom, lol. I dunno, I might make a trip down there for a month or so and stay with friends to see how I like it.

As for the birds, I just have a trio of ducks right now which reminds me, if anyone locally wants some great saxony ducks let me know and I can hook you up, the breeder I got mine from said the rest were destined for freezer camp.

The min. wage here in WA is $8.55 but house prices have gone way up lately. If I do stay north I will go to Montana or something, it seems like all the coasties and crazy Californians (no offence) are moving to Spokane and our winters arent scaring them away. Maybe I will be lucky and find a winning lotto ticket and have a few houses.... Oh which that is one good thing about WA is the Washington Lotto commercial with the chickens...

Come on down to Jawja...we'll find something for you to do. Born in Atlanta and raised and lived all my life just south of the Big A. Love it here. Four hours to the mountains, 4 hours to the Atlantic, 5 hours to the Gulf.

min wage in ks is $ 7.25, we're in south west Ks, if you don't mind tornado's....bought our farm 5 years ago from $27,000.00 and that was fir 10 acres, house, barn, and a double garage......planning on buying another 1o acres farm for half the price we paid for our at a sheriff auction soon.

Flyingmonkeypoop!! Are you out of your ever lovin' MIND boy?? You do that, and you're going to live to regret it! Don't you know you're already living in God's Country??? You gots a screw loose boy!!! That's all I can figure! You just have a screw loose!!

My thoughts exactly.

I was born in Southeast Missouri and moved up here when I was almost 8. I will never go back, except to visit family for a short period of time.

The following are reasons I won't go back:

#1 Bugs
#2 Snakes
#3 Humidity
#4 Bugs
#5 Bugs
#6 Bugs

Did I mention that there are alot of nasty little critters running around in the South?

Tell me about trying to sell a bird around here!!! That's why most of my sales are on eggbid.

Bugs can get annoying but I dunno, the snow sucks when doing chores.

Haha I know. And it seems like when you see something you want locally the people are jerks. Like I called a person about ducks. It was Wednesday and they had plenty of them and told me to call Sunday morning. Well I emailed Saturday night just to be safe then called a few times Sunday morning like I was supposed to and they never returned my calls or email or anything. Its not like they were the best birds or anything but its the thought that they were rude enough not to drop me a simple email saying 'sold'. Then there are what, like 10 people around here max. that have show birds and you know all of them and their birds so showing isnt much fun, same results all the time because the fair gets the same judges all the time, I am not knocking Jim because he is a good judge but I like variety.
It seems like Tennessee and Ohio have all the cool shows.

I'm not going to the Fair this year. It's too hot and I don't want to loose my best birds just to show them.

I know what place I'll get anyway under Jim.......

Yup! We were still up to our eyeballs pretty much as I recall at that time too. And yes, this year was much worse than the year before. Try living in a 38 foot travel trailer while building a log home and having to deal with that!

Talk about an adventure!

Sorry to hear that you lost some of your babies to the cold.

We keep a nice heat lamp in the girls house and it's also insulated. One thing we already knew before we moved over from Olympia was just how dang cold it could get here!!

Yes, it can be a hard scrabble life around here. But, one learns to adjust and become rather inventive in solving certain problems brought on by adverse climate conditions.

We're kind of shaking in our shoes a little bit about the coming winter. Our beloved 1950 Ford 8-N locked up her tranny about a month ago. She's stuck in two gears simultaneously. Don't know if we're going to have the time to fix her before winter sets in again. Denny has been talking about buying a good used tractor.

But, with so much else going on, that issue is still very much up in the air for now.

I have family down south in Pearl River, LA, Flyingmonkeypoop. I could ask them for you about job prospects if I knew what your trade is. I do know from talking to Uncle Dennis, that the economy is doing just as bad down there as it is up here. Hopefully you have one of those category of skills that transfers well to wherever in this country you choose to live.

As for the bug issues that others have expressed....I've never seen a bug population that could long withstand an onslaught from a flock of 15-20 determined Banty's!!

I wish you the best of luck if this is what you truly want. BTW, have you considered the wet side of Washington? It might be more of what you're looking for. That is if you have a high tolerance for rain and perpetually, persistently cloudy skies! As for me, wild horses could never drag me back to the WETstern side! Nope! Not goin! Can't MAKE me!!

I personally like Northern Arkansas. My sister lives there and it is beautiful, lots of recreation and not alot of codes and rules. A ice storm every once and a while. Most of the time it is above freezing. Most of the problem with the area is no jobs but I guess it depends on your field of expertise. The cost of living is very low and there are regular people there too.

I still dont know what I am going to do for the ducks this winter, they might have to live in the garage. The wet side doesnt like me and I dont like it, the people over there seem different, so fast and always in a rush, lots of animal rights and eco-friendly people, lol.

As for my trade it is mainly ag related. So far I have worked for a cow dairy, a goat dairy, and a hardware store. I know tons and tons about livestock and got the highest grade in livestock (184%). I am also big into horticulture (got 132%) so anything like that would be good. I am pretty good with welding and metal work also. I know how to be a cashier and work inside stores. I know, my wrk experience is kinda lame so far but still. Maybe I can make a living off of birds like some friends do so I wont have to worry about a job, lol.
