Hello all, & @Lacy Duckwing (tagging you).

This is my current setup.

In all I have 13 chickens. First flock is about 3 years old, second flock is approximately 1 and a half yrs old, and the third flock consists of bantams which I got this summer. So, the church I go to is held at a farm house with lots of animals, including a bunch of nice chickens that are free ranged and everyone is protected by two large Great Pyrenees. :) I have already been thinking about selling my birds and getting new ones....but now I have an awesome idea. If I could give my chickens to a place where they'd be cared for and loved...(like the farm, they're really great- and I'd get to see them every Sunday!). I'd like to rescue a bunch of the hens off of craigslist...the ones that people are trying to get rid of in the fall. What do you think? I don't know if there's anything else to say unless I get some questions.
Thanks in advance!

NOTE: By "rescue" I don't mean battery hens and sick hens. I mean some egg layers that people I trying to get rid of before winter... so they can start a new flock in the spring.

Please read post #36 BEFORE replying or reacting to ANY of the posts in THIS thread. Thank you.
I don't think it was quite clear. You may want to edit your original post so people understand what you're trying to do. 🙂
This would’ve been ideal unfortunately a year later the poster hasn’t changed anything.

I am Totally offended by this post. I know it’s a year old and the poster may never see it but hopefully anybody else like myself (researching starting a chicken rescue) will know to not waste their time on this post.
What OP wants to do is NOT rescue. OP is trying to get rid of her birds to get new ones because she’s tired of the old (and because the old ones won’t be laying eggs soon if not stopped already).

“Rescue“ involves saving animals lives for them. It is NOT for someone to fulfill their own selfish wants of having eggs. I’m disgusted after reading the first two pages of comments that few even picked up on this.

You want to get rid of your birds because:
  1. Your 3 yo may have stopped laying or you think they will stop soon.
  2. Your 1.5 yo You probably feel will be stopping soon.
  3. Bantams lay tiny eggs so not much benefit to you

As someone else said please update your post and remove the word “rescue”. It is very offensive to those of us who have animals as pets. And it’s very misleading. I would never in 1 million years even think about dumping pets onto someone else and acquiring new chickens that are still laying.

You said:
“I mean just taking a couple of the egg laying hens on craigslist that people are trying to give away before winter. And all my other chickens would be gone…”

You clearly only want them for their eggs because you said “as "almost retired laying hens". (the 3 yr olds). And replacing them.... but I feel like it's wrong to get new chicks when I could rescue some other hens to "fill up the space".... Besides, my TSC doesn't have chicks anymore AND I would rather have hens than more chicks.”

Rescues don’t turn away battery hens and Definitely not animals in need of medical attention. Why? Because they need help, deserve help from someone caring, but mostly because their owners won’t pay for a sick or old animal. Could you imagine if everyone gave up their dog and cat just to bring in some lively kittens and puppies? Disgusting.

I hope and pray you did the right thing and kept all of your chickens and NOT acquired new ones. Better yet, hopefully you gave away your existing birds to someone who gives a damnzz

How do you know nobody picked up on this? I'm not pouring back through this thread, but to me it looked like post 1 was edited and everyone was a bit confused before that happened. Pretty sure almost everyone said it's a bad idea.
