Thinking cockerel, hoping not.

Hello everyone, This fine chook hatched Aug 21st - so just over 3 months old... got the egg from a yard of many breeds so not sure what breed, either. Your feedback would be most welcome! Thanks in advance! =)

With the red coming in on the wings would vote probably cockerel, with the feathered feet and peacomb? part Light Brahma maybe?

Thank you! Only ever had rescue girls in our flock before, and decided to let a couple of broody hens have the experience of being mamachooks.... now I think we have three cockerels and three pullets (lost a cockerel and a young pullet and three elder ladies to a hungry fox earlier this week =( ) Can only keep one cockerel, methinks, and that's going to be Pierre de la Terre (see avatar =) So wish this white one (originally named 'Custard') was a pullet.. sigh.

I think I remember the farmer who gave me the eggs mention that they had Brahma's, Orpingtons and some others that have entirely slipped my mind...

I agree with everyone else--it looks like you have a Light Brahma mix cockerel. He's very pretty!

The about 8-10 hens per rooster is just a general guideline, I've been OK with 1:6, especially with older roos who are past that horrible teenage stage, just watch how the girls do and be prepared to adjust. Even in high ratios some roosters will pick only one or two hens as favorites so even high numbers doesn't guarantee the rooster will spread the love around. One question is how the two boys will get along. Do you know how your older roo is with other roos? He will probably keep Custard in check at least for awhile until Custard gets old enough to start challenging him. If you like Custard, can you keep him and see how it works and cull him later if two roos become a problem?
