Thinking of chickens in Georgia

Hi there,
We got offered some chicks a few days ago and had thought about it for years, and I think we're going to go ahead and get those chickens! We need everything; we're total newbies, but my dh and I are both excited and ready to see how it goes. We're only going to have two or three; opinions would be great on a starting number. We can't have more than that because we do live in a small suburban home with close neighbors, and plus we just only want enough eggs for our family of four.

We have two children, ages 7 and 4. Haven't quite spilled it to them that they're getting chickens, but I know they'll be thrilled (we have friends with some).

Anyway this seems like a great forum; just need to figure out where to start!

You're in the right place to start learning! Best plan is to build your coop & run, and learn about breeds. If you're in a subdivision, then started birds would be better to be sure you have hens. Or find someone with sex-link chicks if you want to raise them up. If you go with regular chicks, make sure you know someone who will take boys when they learn to crow.

If you go straight-run, get 6 or 7. About half will be roosters (average).
If you KNOW you have girls, get at least 3-4. Hens are flock animals, and you don't want anyone to get lonely. 4 is great because they can pair up...

We started out with three, then added another two a few weeks ago. Our first three are outside in the coop/run now, and the others will join them in a few weeks. We figured on starting with five so we'd have enough eggs for ourselves, but not too many to overwhelm us newbies.
This forum is a great source of info. Everything I have learned, including the coop I built, came from the posts and PM's from folk on this board. You will learn more than you ever thought possible.

Oh, and fair warning....chickens are addictive. I've only had them for about two months, but I can tell my future will contain far more of these things that I ever intended!
