We got our first 2 dairy goats almost 2 years ago and are loving it. We started with 2 does and now have 28 counting this years kid crop. That's right, they are just as addictive as chickens. All advise so far is good pertaining to fence and auction buying. Make sure you ask any potential sellers if they have had any cases of CL and/or CAE in their herd. CL will leave round scars on their neck about the size of a silver dollar, so if they tell you they are clean, at least look for these scars. If they do, find another seller. You can generally tell how well someone takes care of their herd by just looking at them. They should have all their hair and have a nice shiny coat, and living in a clean enviorment. I would reccommend paying more than $50 for a goat. From my expirience, a cheap goat is cheap for a reason. I bought several of them for less than that and had troubles with both of them.
