I just saw a post on another forum that said that geese in their local market were $12 a pound. I've seen them for $175 per bird on-line.
This is how I figure it: It's the Christmas feast. Cost doesn't count like it would for the rest of the year. Goose should cost at least as much per pound as the prime rib roast that many people serve. I've paid $100 for a prime rib roast. It's the holidays! I just close my eyes, grit my teeth, and pay it. I'm not the only one who does that.
Goose is delicious. My family ate prime rib last night, but my son also was roasting a goose. The goose was a present for his father, and my son will take it over today and has it all ready cooked and smoked and it just has to just be warmed up and glazed. (His father's current wife is a crumby cook and my son didn't want the goose ruined, so he cooked it himself). It smelled so marvelous while cooking that we were both drooling over it and regretting a bit that we'd decided on roast instead of goose for Christmas dinner.
