I have a pullet that started laying on Tuesday (3 days ago). Tuesday she laid a beautiful egg in the nest box, Wednesday she laid a beautiful egg in the nest box, No egg on Thursday and today she laid a soft shell egg from the roost. I have free choice oyster in the run for her to eat and have seen her take some and I have fake eggs in the nesting box. What would cause her to lay a soft shell egg from the roost today when she has been laying hardshells in the nest box? Is this just her body getting used to what it is supposed to do? Any help would be appreciated.

Oh. This just happened with my hens and I've been very worried and confused. Glad to find out it's sort of normal. I've been searching the boards and finding similar stories. Yours situation is almost exactly the same as my own. l got 2 perfect hard shelled eggs right in the box and then nothing and then two soft shelled messes in the wrong place. Funny how the books give detailed info about every single aspect of chicken raising except what to expect when they start laying eggs. That really would be helpful info! The first oops seemed kind of eaten. The second one was not.
