'Bird 'n the Fluffy Butts coop in Ohio
MayMay hasnt been feeling to well the last week or so. I have her on Tylan 50 .5cc once a day via shot. Today i found her on the ground with what looked like her eyeball fallingout. All i could see was red tissue and like a clot. I brought her inside immediatly, sat her down and prepared for the worst. She shook her head and this piece of tissue or muscle or whatever the heck it is flung out and landed on the towel. There is no blood to speak of, no puss, no infection, no smell and it doesnt seem to hurt her.

There are no bugs, no maggots, nothing living. Its just a blob of tissue. Ok, so I sat there with her and looked at her eye. I could see red welling up in the corner of the same eye. Like from the tear duct area. could see it start to get red and she blinked and it got a little bigger. here is a picture of the eye. Notice the red in the corner of her eye.

about 3 minutes later i could see another clot type thing starting to push its way out. I took a q tip and touched it and it came out with the q tip.

She immediatly started to feel better. Wanted water - drank good. Wanted off the table and back outside. It was dark and her bedtime. I took her back down to the coop and figured that was all of it. NOPE
I have sat with her for over two hours now and about every 10 mintues or so another blob comes up out her eye. I just touch it with a q tip and drag it out and off her eye. No blood, just these clots!!!!!

Has anyone ever seen something like this???? what is happening to my MayMay!!!???????????????????

I'm not a veterinarian, but it seems that there may be something like a rupture blood vessel around her eye. I think the clotting is just her body's natural response to stop what bleeding may be occurring. I wouldn't remove any more of the clots if it can be elped and contact a local poultry/avian veterinarian as soon as possible. Again, this is only my theory. Let us know how she is doing!

the clots are coming out of her eye on her own. She shakes her head when they start to fall out of the eye. Instead of her scratching the eye area with her foot to get it off her face I am picking it up off her face. It is so gross. If i dont pick it off gently of course, from her eye as it is coming out it will get flung all over and i am more worried about her hurting herself.

There is a respiratory infection that one of the symptoms is finding blood flung on the coop walls. Maybe search for that.

I'm not a vet so this is just a guess on my part. She already have beak malformations so I wonder if it effected her sinuses as well... someone said it before.. infection?

If she has a respiratory infection, the sneezing and the general inflammation can cause rupture of the blood vessels in the ENT mucosa. It could be mycoplasmosis which is a nasty respiratory virus. I've seen this with cats, sneezing bloody mucous everywhere. If her eye looks normal, just continue treating the sinus infection. The eyes and the sinuses and the nasopharynx are all hooked up together. I've never seen this in a chicken before, but if her eye is otherwise normal, one would have to assume this is a product of her sinuses.

no sneezes lately, no discharge, no fever. I hear a little bit of raspy in her lungs and she is an older hen that I adopted from a rescue a few years back. Her upper beak was always malfored. Like someone debeaked her top half and missed her bottom half. I am always trying to keep her nose clean from dust and mud and stuff. I wondered if she wasnt coming back down with Respiratory issues. she has done that before. The tylan50 worked like a charm before within days. She has been on the Tylan for four days now. It is so hard to describe this stuff. It looks like a small piece of a liver coming out of her eye socket! that's about the only way to describe it.
