OOOH I see what you mean. Yes, they do eventually peek out. The one I have the photo of was pretty young and his crest never did develop as I would have liked. Honestly, it usually takes until they are a few months old before I can even guess the sex on them. Right now, I have six 2 month old chicks and I think I have 3 pullets & 3 cockerels. That's based on attitude, tail carriage & crest shape.
