Wow. That is the first time I have seen pictures of this oil spill.

I cant believe they are turning free help away.

About 2-3 weeks ago I saw a help wanted ad in our employment department trying to find people who would train to clean up the spill in Louisiana. And the pay was around $15 an hour. Plus paid training. Paid trip expenses and paid place to live while cleaning. You had to work one month. Off one month.. And you had to commit to 3 working months to the spill. I wonder if that ad is still up..

We seem to live in a time of 'blame'. Whilst someone is pointing the finger elsewhere he might just divert attention away from himself. I thought that the public pillorying of the BP CEO and Chairman, similar to the treatment meted out to Toyota executives previously, was a good example. The time wasted in that Hearing could have been better spent looking at solutions to the problem. All that was achieved was finger pointing, cheap publicity for politicians and loss of any goodwill.

What is clear is that the clean up and compensation for economic loss will be funded by BP and a few others in full. Indians in Bhopal never had that - but then again, how many people cared that big industry and the insurance market shut down the scandal to save money in a far away land that didn't really matter much? Which is the greater scandal, an oil leak that kill birds and fish or ignoring the legitimate claims of poor people in a poor country whose lives and those of their children and grandchildren are ruined?

More than a few tragedies have been caused by Western greed but it's not noticed until it hits home soil.

Funny.. people from other countries say were greedy...
yet.. they're the first ones asking for handouts...

I hope that comment isn't aimed at me! By 'were' ('we're?) I imagine you mean Americans. I wrote 'Western' greed. If I were to be geographic, I would point the finger at the whole of the developed world, including my own country of Britain.
