This CAN'T be right...

So, I was figuring out how much space ducklings need, and I got ten square footage per duckling. Okay, I thought, how much square footing does this run have? The run itself is 15 feet wide, and we're extending it to 40 feet long. I only calculated 15 by 35, though. I got 525 square feet... Seriously?! That would mean at least fifty ducks would fit... That does NOT seem comfortable at all. Is the calculator I used messed up? Or is the ten square foot per duckling just a bare minimum type thing?

I also calculated the rest of the yard, where they'll be spending hopefully the majority of their time, which is around 50 feet by 70-80 feet(though I think it's actually a bit more) and got 4000 square feet... Do ducks REALLY not need that much room? I am stumped.

Even if it's all correct, there is no way I'm having more than eight ducks at a time. (Well, okay, ten, lol.)

The ten square foot number is the bare minimum if the ducks have free access to open pasture all during the day, if I recall from Storey's Guide. 25 sf is the minimum if they have limited access to open pasture, I think.

So 525 would be enough room for 21 ducks max. Sound more like it?

LOL! XD If it weren't for my grandparents, I would probably fill it. But, my grandma is already upset enough that I have to get a couple (or, you know, three... four...) more females. But, since she's not paying for anything, she's kind of quiet about it. She was at first, but since I'm having more, my partner's mom is willing to pay for everything(and they don't need much lol). So my grandma just has to look at them. I don't think that's too difficult. XD

This is off-topic(but hey, this is my thread so psh) but my ducklings are drooling? I looked it up, and it says it's normal, but this is first time I've seen Pyrrhos drool. They were sleeping and I picked them up for a bath(they were still messy from their vitamins this morning, otherwise I would have let them sleep). Maybe Pyrrhos has drooled before and I've just never seen it lol. The four little ones are Welsh Harlequins(five days old), Pyrrhos is a wild-hatched Mallard(two weeks old).

Sometimes right after they have been drinking water they will have some come out of their mouths but I don't think I have even seen a duckling drool. be sure to keep a close eye to the temps in your brooder too, maybe they are too warm,. Just a guess though, where did you find the info on it being normal? and that's great that your going to get more ducks and be able to keep the boys!! I like your math

On here, actually. I looked it up on Google and was linked to a few different threads about it. Sometimes it's heat, but the brooder is the same temp as it's been since I got the youngest ducklings. I keep one side at 88-91. The other side is in the lower eighties. None of them are drooling now.

I'm not sure exactly what causes the drooling but I've had it happen a few times when mine were babies and I was moving them from pen to tub or back. I just thought it had something to do with them drinking then being picked up. They squirmed a lot so I thought maybe I was holding them too tightly but even when I'd loosen my grip they would still do it. It only happened for like a week maybe. Not sure what was up with it but they haven't done it since them few times. Sorry I wasn't more help.

That's really interesting, Amiga. They haven't done it after that one time, though.
