This chick has an interesting pattern..

And isn’t lav a recessive trait? Wouldn’t the chicks from this cross look more like the welsummer? I would love to see pics of them
they are interesting looking - and too young to really see much but here are my Welsummer / Lav O mixes. 2 look the same probably from my larger Wellie and one is feathering out more orpington like and is much smaller.

Genetically, a Lavender Orpington is a black chicken with 2 copies of the recessive gene that turns black into lavender.

Since the lavender gene is recessive, that doesn't show in the chicks.
The chicks look the same as chicks from a Black Orpington (or any other solid black parent.)

The black is dominant over most other colors and patterns, so chicks are usually black. They can be other colors if the other parent gives them some gene that affects black: Barring, Blue, Dominant White, Dun, or in some cases chocolate.

So for a chick the base color for a lav orp and a welsummer would be black, and whatever trait the welsummer adds to it?

So they look exactly like their genetic mix says they should 🙂

So the two dark barred are looking very blue. I’ll try to get some updated pics tomorrow when I pick them up out of the red light in the brooder. Some minimal barring on the tips of the feathers and a greyish overall color on the rest. The “partridge” also is now looking a similar greyish color. They are 6 weeks on Monday.

Assuming they are both cockerels due to my being told the roo was australorp and the hen was a Wyandotte.

These are the two barred chicks today.
