Hi all,
I own chickens for enjoyment and over the years have had a couple roosters (seen in the image below) whom I’ve hatched chicks from. I recently bred the grand-chick of one of my favourite hens who passed away.
The chick is happy and healthy but I’ve noticed this little imperfection on its toe. Any ideas as to how this has happened? I’ve attached below the lineage - I’d love to hear your thoughts as to what this chick will look like grown up too!

Weird! I have no clue, but please keep updating this thread to see what happens. Does the chick have all black skin? Strange from those parents.

Underneath the feathers there is pink skin and there’s some yellow colouring coming in on the beak, but now you have me thinking…. We also bred a silkie with the lavender auracana (first rooster) and she and the black hen lay similar eggs. (Pictured hen lays blue and silkie lays green) perhaps I’ve totally misjudged what offspring I actually hatched! That could suggest the toes. But then again I’d assume there would be the two entire additional toes like the silkie and her offspring.

I've seen folks post pictures very similar to those of silkies. With pet versions, they sometimes get their fifth toe fused with their fourth.

Looks like the polydactyl trait got messed up and the extra toe fused with the other. Without selective breeding against abnormal extra toes, this can happen.

What's the word for trait, or attribute? Someone recently posted their unbearded silkie "accidentally" bred with their bearded ones and was trying so hard for me to say their 7-week-old silkie might grow a beard yet. :)

I said sorry, no, they are hatched with or without that trait or attribute. I'm missing the right word.

That's the fun with Polydactly, one parent may not show it, but may still pass it on.
