I bought two bantam chicks around the end of May from the local feed store. About 10 days later one of them died mysteriously-she just got weak and died within a day -no outward signs. Well the other chick went crazy in mourning for her buddy. She chirped and chirped LOUDLY for about two hours. I picked her up and tried to comfort her and it seems that she bonded immediately with me.
The surviving chick is about 7 weeks old now and the loud chirping has not relented and if anything it has gotten tons worse-if she sees me walk by she starts up the ear splitting chirping and jumping up and down in her cage. I thought she would settle down and grow out of it but NO-she can keep it up for hours. I was hesitant to get another chick/friend for her at first because I figured whatever killed the other one was likely contagious.
Its been a month and the chirping is driving me crazy. I have two 4 month old bantam pullets outside in the coop but attempts to integrate have not been good. Even with supervision, the big ones have jumped on the chick. Plus I can't put her outside when she is SO LOUD. Even so, I have been taking her out every day this past week for a little while when they are free ranging in the yard but the chick spends most of the time in my lap -chirping loudly.
Does anyone have some advice? I am not even sure she's a she and she is very small-smaller than my others at this age. I put a mirror in her cage but she isn't fooled. I also put her the same room with my chinchilla for company but apparently it isn't the same as a chick/buddy.
Will she ever settle down and stop chirping!? I read here that chicks will chirp when they are cold, hungry etc. but she is warm, well fed and watered. What more can I do?
