I purchased 5 pullet chicks and 1 duckling from our local farm store back in mid April. I've never had any concern as to the sex of my chickens until my neighbors became insistent that my single golden laced Wyandotte is a rooster. I've researched the internet and while I'm no pro by any means, think this chicken is still a hen but now I'm not 100%. It is right about 14 weeks old and does have spur bumps, as do the other 4 hens. If this beautiful bird turns out to be a rooster, it has to go because I do not want breeding. Could someone please help?!

Why are they saying it's a roo? If it were in my yard, I'd be calling it a hen at this point.

And welcome to BYC!

I am not seeing anything screaming roo either, but you should post this in our What Gender section for more help.

Enjoy these gorgeous birds and welcome to our flock!

They are saying its a rooster because of the spur bumps, tail carriage, strut, and wattle. Might I add, these neighbors do not own chickens or have had any in the past 8 years. I tried explaining that the Wyandotte hens and roosters have wattles. This chicken is almost 15 weeks old has never crowed, no saddle or sickle feather development.

It looks just like my wyandotte hens. I have a Marans hen with deadly spurs, it happens.

Keep in mind, all chickens have spur bumps.  But only the cockerels continue to grow them. :-)

Yes, hens can even grow some pretty nasty spurs. So, remember, spurs are a very poor gender indicator.

Thank you ALL for being so welcoming and sharing your knowledge! I absolutely love this site.
