This is a children's movie?!

Because there are scumbags who will take what they want by force, and the only way to resist them is by force. Humans are depraved beings, and will happily resort to violence out of desperation or convenience.

Never thought about it before. Plus, it's not really that historically accurate for most of the movie.

That IS actually a little disturbing now that I think about it.

I was just talking about the beginning: slaves being whipped, mothers being literally thrown aside while the men go inside, and then it shows the cradle with a sword held over it, and cuts to the mother outside crying her eyes out. Most kids can guess what that meant, especially with the lyrics his mother sings:
My son,
I have nothing I can give,
but this chance that you may live.

Kids are going to figure out that the other babies AREN'T living, if they haven't already.

As for visual learning: That's all well and good, I suppose. But as far as sugar-coated, you'd think they could have found a happy medium. I mean, yes, they could show that the other children did die, but did they have to make is so completly awful?
Agin, maybe I'm just weird. And the dramatic music didn't help, my four year old sister was terrified.

That being said, I LOVE the music.

Well, it is rated PG which should be an indicator that it might not be suitable for little kids. And yes, the fact remains that mankind is generally not a "kind" species. Hopefully it is that which we strive towads.

"Shrek" is also rated PG, but there's a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE difference in the level of violence.

This is enough to kill my trust in the rating system.

I loved that movie when I was a kid. I knew what they were doing, but I knew that it was wrong. That was an example of what NOT to do for me. I guess I was just a very analytical child.

PS I also loved the music.

I guess I just think it's insane because of the people out there who are going to say, "Oh, the story of Moses, how cute!"
When you think of the story of Moses, you think of a cute little baby gently floating down the river in a basket.

Dreamworks decided to have his mother put him in an area of the river filled with crocodiles, very close to all the ships. What mother would do that, if she's trying to save his life? And yes, she probably wouldn't be allowed very close to the palace, what with being a Hebrew commoner. But honestly, in children's movies, I'm all for sugar-coated.

I never got to see that movie, but I've been saying for 30 years that the most violence seen on TV is cartoons. Anybody ever watch the Buggs Bunny/Road Runner Hour as a kid? All of the Warner Brothers characters and stories are very morbid and violent. But we watched 'em anyway, didn't we?

Yeah, but it's quite frequently the "bad guy" who gets hurt.
The hunter is trying to shoot Bugs Bunny.
Wile E. Coyote is trying to eat the road runner.
Tom is trying to eat Jerry.

It's Elmer Fudd, Wile, and Tom that get beaten up.
And I agree that it's very common. But common doesn't nessacarily equal good, sadly.

Well, that and they are CLEARLY cartoons. Unlike some of the crap on tv for kids today that seriously blurs the line between reality and fantasy.

Shrek wasn't rated pg for violence, it was rated that way for bathroom humor and suggestive material. Something rated pg for violence is going to be quite different. You need to look a little beyond the simple rating and see why something received a particular rating.

I haven't seen the movie, but it sounds like something inappropriate for a small child.
