Fairy Tales were meant to scare good behavior into kids...

The modern versions to fairy tales?

"Don't go out in the rain, you will get a deadly cold"
"Don't go out in the street, you will get hit by a car"

Think about deadly virus eating up a person from the inside out...
or an auto accident where someone is killed...
those in the mind of a child can be very gross

The question is, how to you teach the gruesome lessons of life without making your kids numb to them, or afraid of them?

Yep

The story of Moses is nothing about "a cute little baby floating down the river." You must be reading a far different Bible from the one that I read. It's about a child (children) being hidden so that they would not be killed in a genocide. That's reality.

I didn't say that's what it's ABOUT. I'm reading plain ol' KJV. I said that's the mental image it seems most people get when they hear "Baby Moses". All this thread was about was that I think that movie should have more of a parental warning on it.
And I am very aware of reality.

I beleive the suggestions here are that watching violence on television will some how make a child or adult more prone to violence.

"Come out, you wabbit, and lemme see the color of your spurting blood!" - actual Elmer Fudd line. Seriously. Don't get me started on Yosemite Sam. "Keep your thumb off that scale, Pierre, or I'll BLOW IT OFF!!!" This is why I love Looney Tunes.

Well, the Prince of Egypt, being based off a biblical story, makes sense to include the truth about the stories. Being a slave wasn't a walk in the park. Slave drivers didn't offer hugs and cookies for a good day's work. The bible in and of itself is a very violent book, especially in the Old Testament. College level theology classes requiring in depth biblical study made it clear that the bible isn't all about love and hand holding. The Old Testament God was a pissy, violent jerk in actuality, not at all loving.

Assuming you are right about God which I think you are wrong never the less he did send his son for many reasons one of which is as a mediator between God and man. Your professor probably didn't tell you that part.

Hand-holding love and actual love are completely different things. Look up the Canaanite god Molech (and heck, Canaanite customs), then tell me who was violent and unloving.

Yes, actually, it has been studied and documented without question that children who watch more violent shows and play more violent games are more agressive and involved in fights more than their peers who don't. The comparison to prostitiution is an apple and oranges comparison, IMHO.

I took a class on childrens literature in college, and it was fascinating. Children were exposed to death, disease, and violence at a much higher rate back then. The intent of fairy tales is to give children and outlet to deal with their own scary feelings and thoughts. They process the story to come to terms with their own fears. You can actually use them for therapy. And yes, some of the stories were definatley intended to "scare them straight".

It's all about striking a balance between exposing a child to scary things (I don't insulate my child from scary images, but I watch him and make sure he is okay when they do come up) and letting them work through it, while not making them numb to it and thinking that it is acceptable to mistreat others.

i don't know guys. you really want your children to grow up in a life that is coated in sugar and totally inaccurate to the audacities of the world? maybe te movie is a bit violent.... but otherwise would the children get the point of "why did his mom float him in the basket down the river?"

imo, the "violence" is sort of a neccessity....

otherwise the movie would be boring, and confusing. especially to a young child.

...when I was little, I got to watch movies like The Labyrinth (w/ david bowie). that movie scared the CRAP outta me! i'd rather realistic human violence anyday over fake movies about monsters/goblins taking children away from their families for NO REASON! nevermind the pelvic bulge and spandex... uuugh! yeck!

there are worse movies out there. dont shelter your kids too much, or they won't learn that there are bad things happening in the world. or they'll wake up one day and realize how fearful of a parent you are... and pity you for it. I know a lot of people who grew up like that, and felt that way about their parents.
