this is just HORRIBLE (craigslist post)

I think its a bit sick to keep the chick alive for snake food. Its very easy to do a home euthanasia, and if she's okay with keeping it alive to feed to someone's snake, she should be okay with doing the euthanasia herself. As far as not having enough time, it takes much more time to keep a chick alive than to euthanize. If she's not strong enough to do it maybe she shouldn't be raising chicks, or be willing to take the chick to the vet to be euthanized if she really can't do it herself.

petpaw. I believe in giving it back to the earth. I refuse to throw away my poultry that dies. If they were part of this family even for a second and pass on, then they get a proper burial. I give every chick the choice to live. i have a teenager who uses only one leg. It started off weak, but its still here...

As for your handicapped chick, I dunno, maybe copy that ad above and place it in your nearest craigslist......... IF you agree with that.

I dont have a problem seeing folks feeding chicks to their snake. Its going to be expensive in their pocketbooks.

Once they are sold, I do not care what they do with it. If I had to worry about every bird I sold and find out everything they are doing to them, i would be sick with everything and try to add on more burden to my chickens. No thanks! If I had a prized hen, I would ask them to take really good care of her but once she leaves my hands, her fate is decided by the new owners.

Yes! i agree, but thats one thing. She was offering this chick as free snake food or for rehab.... Well, we all know, anyone with a snake will jump on that.

Since I do not own snakes, I think watching them eat their prey (dead or alive) is fascinating. I don't see anything wrong with feeding the chick to a snake. Snakes aren't my favorite animal, but they are an animal nonetheless and need to survive. And in all honesty, I think trying to save a chick as young as 5 days is a waste of time. I even helped my neighbor feed her son's snakes while he was away, which was interesting to watch. They have a boa and we fed it a live rat. It's the Circle of Life... embrace it and move on.

I'll never forget the day when I was a kid out with my sister (6.5 years my elder) and she just started SCREAMING... around her leg, a snake had coiled itself and was climbing up. I thought she'd have a heart attack.

I shouldn't have dispatched it because it was a good snake to get rats.

i couldnt even imagine, i probably would have had a heart attack. apparently in this last month ive found out my weakness is snakes, i nearly died when i saw the one eating MY BABY GOSLING!!!!! My husband was at work so he couldnt be my knight in shining armor....

I couldnt breathe.... it tried to spring and bite me, when i saw what it was doing and "Tried" to kill it..... so it tried to et me. it was brown and yellow?????? not too sure, but the yellow was burned into my brain. scary. hate them. i think it was a king snake, but i HAVE NO IDEA!

In the first line of the add thats posted for snake food or for rehab. That right there shows she is open having somone try and help the chick. But it also shows that the person is smart enough to know it is a very rare person who will want a chick that is hurt for the purpose to help it only. And if the person is unable to cull it then they are right to offer it to somone who can do it instead of letting it suffer be it by snake, lizard, or what not

I agree with the others that say it's part of life. The snakes have to eat too. Wild rodent eating snakes do us humans a great service.
I once got into it with a pet store employee who refused to sell me a gerbil for my ball python, Dixie. Dixie was on a hunger strike and really needed to eat. Gerbils are close to their natural prey, so....
The idiot salesgirl wanted to sell me a goldfish or some crickets! Balls don't eat fish or crickets, they eat rodents. Besides, as I told her, what about the poor goldfish or the poor cricket? Don't they have rights too? No, cuz they're not cute and cuddly she tells me.

Did I enjoy feeding the gerbil to the snake? No, but she had to eat.

I don't blame you Lisa, with the first few words "free chick for snake food", I was like "WHAT!? Kind of heartless?" then it went on to say also for rehab, the chick's condition, and that they didn't have the heart to put it down themselves. So then I understood they're just putting out the options for the little guy. Cause I mean, not a lot of people would take a chick to just put it out of its misery, but they will if they have a snake to feed it to?

Or if they want to try and fix it up to where it can live okay, which is where the rehab comes in.

Does sound nasty, but hey, snakes have to eat. As long as they aren't eating MY chicks

I first learned about black snakes and chicks and what happens, when I was about 3 or 4, and dad cut open a bulging black snake. What was inside? A freshly swallowed chick

So I definitely don't even like to THINK about chicks as snake food
