This is so NOT funny!

In my adult coop I have always used extra large, covered kitty litter boxes that my girls seem to love.
So, when we set up the baby coop we bought three, plus a large dog crate that is necessary for my meaties girls (they're too big to fit in the litter boxes).
Then two girls went broody in the litter boxes and a meatie went broody in the dog crate. Trying to get by cheaply, we bought storage totes, cut a side out of each one and turned them over. Viola! Nestboxes. Except the girls manage to kick the eggs out of them on a regular basis, thus I've gone back to the kitty litter boxes.

I've always manged to scrounge something. At this point it's a matter of principle with me, I refuse to pay for one. There's always plenty of scrap around to make a barrier across the bottom front to keep eggs and hay in. I think I have 11 now.

Too many broodies really is better than not enough or none. Really. IMO of course.

When I need cheap easy nest boxes in a hurry, I use cardboard boxes.

Get a box of the right size, use packing tape to make it sturdier, and tape up a flap on the front to keep the eggs and hay in. I like to have a 5" tall sill, and 7-8" tall opening for the hens to come in. Voila! Assuming you have a box on hand (who doesn't?), a few pennies worth of packing tape and you've got a nest box! The key is not letting them go on top of the box too much... Cardboard's not as sturdy as wood.

One of the things I really like about them is that if a hen goes broody and you want to move her to a special area to hatch some eggs, you can move the hen with her nest very easily. And because it's her nest, she often will keep on being broody even though she's in new surroundings.

I'm gonna have to say this is sourland's fault-he's been doing the "More broodies for Gritsar" dance for days.
Somehow or other, MississippiFarmBoy, Imp and Mr.Birdaholic HAVE to be involved as well(seems like the 4 of them are partners in crime lately) so can't point the finger at one without pointing it at the rest.

Sorry, men, but I simply must put the blame where it lies.
Couldn't POSSIBLY be Gritty's fault for begging for broodies for so long(I got your back, Gritty).
