How awful for the little chick...but how much worse for that poor child? To be brought up with such disregard for life...first a chick (not that I'd imagine that's the first)..then what, the kitten meows...the baby cries? Seems like your gut instinct was spot on...but can you show this kid that that is not the way it is supposed to be?
Heartbreaking...imagine having to live in that house?

The poor kid is devastated actually. He didn't know his dad had done that, and he is so hurt and so angry. He is really the sweetest kid. That is the main reason I went ahead and gave in. I truly thought he would keep an eye on the chick. He was, but he didn't know his dad did it, and by the time he found out it was too late.

Have you contact your local Dept of Health and Human Services (DSS) yet, or contact your local authorities for cruelty to animals?

OMG, that is a horrible thing to happen, you might have some legal backup, that is considered "animal cruelty", and if you call your local animal control office. You can report that family and let animal control take over. You need to call your animal control office as soon as you can, even if they can't "prove" a case, I am certain you will put a scare into that man. That is sad : (

ok replying to my own post, but I really think you need to call your local animal control service. There are laws, that were broken, if you call them and have them and open a case, it would really, make a case, for your stance. That way future parents, know not to mess with you : )
And don't be too discouraged, you did a good thing, all your other chicks are doing good, Just take this as a learning experince. I'd really look into making a "contract" for the next batch of chicks you adopt out. : )

I'm a little afraid to call and report it. I did tell my principal about it. The mom works for the school, so it's a fine line. I could lose my job over something that causes too much strife. I had to call CPS last year about a student, and it didn't turn out well for me. I'm certainly paying attention now though. I know they have other animals at home, so I'm going to do some fishing to see if there is more that needs to be done.
When I talked to the student more about it, he acted like his dad didn't know the chick wouldn't be okay outside with the dog... UGH... I'm not sure what to believe.

While what went on with the chick was horrific and sad, I'm really concerned about the child. Please keep an eye on him. I hope he's safe at home and isn't being subjected to the same cruelty as that poor chick.

This is my second year to have him in my class, and I think he and his siblings are being treated well. The mom cares, but I think this may be a dad who is one of those people that believes animals are not deserving of being treated well simply because they are not human....

I know.. I've been sick over it for two days now... The secretary at our school has tons of chickens.. I thought she was going to go on a rampage when I told her about it. She wanted the chicks that were left over from the hatch, and there weren't enough for her to take. That's what really made her sick. I'm actually hatching a whole batch at home right now just for her...

I really wish that I had trusted my instincts on this one. I was so hesitant to let one go home with them. I am SO sad that I was right.

I got into an argument with a friend of mine, because I told him this story and his reply was, "so what.. it's just a chick"...

That is so sad. I also read the mum works at the school so your in a spot, i just cannot comprehend how this guy would think a lone chick would be ok outside, let alone with adding a dog to the mix. A single chick just does not make that much noise, i should know noise i have a macaw and a pionus parrot and have 5 budgies in my house, you wanna talk noise?? That doesn't even cover the dogs or the teenagers.

I am not sure contacting authorities would lend much help, it's hard to prove and frankly putting a child as the gateway to what proof there is wouldn't likely bode well. I am again so sorry. Your heart was in the right place.

If you do decide to adopt out again, I would insist on talking with all the adults in the home and requiring that every member that lives in the home have a chance to meet the bird before adoption. I used to work in an animal shelter and this was standard procedure for us.

We asked that everyone in the home visit so that we could see for ourselves that everyone is on the same page where the needs of the animals are concerned.
I'm sorry this happened. That poor kid will never forget that.

Some people don't treat animal with kindness. Mine are all pets and have names but I know some people who just think it's a stupid animal. It's always hard when you run into people like that.
