I have an almost 4 week old silkie mix that was hatched by my BA. She's been a good mama but a couple days ago she flew the broody box and started laying and roosting again. The couple times I checked on the chick he (I think he's a he... I named him Axel) was up on the roost snuggling with mama, but this evening I was suprised to find this:

That's Axel snuggling with his Papa! My Silkie named Skull has always been protective of the little guy. I've watched him tap dance around my other hens keeping them away from little Axel. I'm all the way impressed with my Roo.

Isn't that precious! I have a silkie roo that will do the same thing. He will also take a clutch of babies off away from mom and will scratch and "feed" them stuff when free ranging. Great pic!

I was so disappointed when my silkie started crowing. Now I couldn't be happier. He's an amazing protector and all the way friendly with me... tho he doen't like my 6 year old very much. You should see him chase that poor kid. It's all the way funny.

I know! Right? When I first went out to the coop Axel was UNDER Skull between his feet and Skull was like "Whoa there little fella!!" By the time I got out there with the camera they had resumed the "We're cool" position.
