It is hard watching a parent ail. Even harder when you can't sit on them and make them take better care of themselves. 

Having helped care for each of my parents in their death beds, I absolutely agree.

Point was that since my grandmother died of the same thing (and had lots of aches and pains) at the same age in the 1950's as my mother did in the late 90's, only with the addition of having had cataracts, at the same age with no smoking ever, it only drives home the fact that we can't always know if smoking "caused" this or that or not. Chances are that it contributed, but we can't absolutely know.

Or beg, plead, pray, ask, request, convince, sway, fool or bully(just kidding). Guess my reasons are selfish in nature,1) I would like to keep my mother around and 2) would like my kids to have a grandmother well into their thirties like I did. My father has been dead almost 10 years now and my son barely remembers him due to being 4 at the time. Makes me sad. What was worse was watching my dad waste away from cancer(liver) for a man that hardly drank. Two heart attacks, two open heart surgery( first one in 74, groundbreaking at the time) a piece of lung removed and various other things and he dies from cancer. It is hard losing a parent for any reason but I guess a sudden death is better cause you remember how they looked but on the flip side you don't get to say your goodbyes which I got to do with my dad even though he barely resembled than man I knew. He didnt want chemo because he saw what his brother through. I tried to convince him to do it but it was his choice, that a lot of people loved him and wanted him around. They gave him 6 months and lived 17 months and I was thankful for that.

Sorry I took this thread in a sad sort of direction, Kristy. I know your intent was humor as we try to self diagnose. I have had crohns,ibs, colitis, ilitis and every other stomach malady I could conjure up in my mind. But a professional said none of the above. My shoulder, a story for another day.
