Firefighters watch home burn

I don't blame the firefighters themselves, but the laws that put them into that situation to begin with.

A Tennessee couple helplessly watched their home burn to the ground, along with all of their possessions, because they did not pay a $75 annual fee to the local fire department.
Vicky Bell told the NBC affiliate WPSD-TV that she called 911 when her mobile home in Obion County caught fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene but as the fire raged, they simply stood by and did nothing. "In an emergency, the first thing you think of, 'Call 9-1-1," homeowner Bell said. However, Bell and her husband were forced to walk into the burning home in an attempt to retrieve their own belongings. "You could look out my mom's trailer and see the trucks sitting at a distance," Bell said. "We just wished we could've gotten more out."
South Fulton Mayor David Crocker defended the fire department, saying that if firefighters responded to non-subscribers, no one would have an incentive to pay the fee. Residents in the city of South Fulton receive the service automatically, but it is not extended to those living in the greater county-wide area.
"There's no way to go to every fire and keep up the manpower, the equipment, and just the funding for the fire department," Crocker said.
The South Fulton policy produced precisely the same nightmare scenario last year, when homeowner Gene Cranick--who had likewise failed to pay the $75 annual fee for rural Obion County residents--saw his house engulfed by flames as South Fulton firefighter watched close by. That incident sparked a debate among conservative pundits over the limits of fee-for-service approaches to government.
For his part, Mayor Crocker stressed that the city's firefighters will help people in danger, even those who haven't paid the fee. "After the last situation, I would hope that everybody would be well aware of the rural fire fees, this time," Crocker said.

That is a LOAD of crap! If they can not pay the fee, most fire department will charge you the full fee for the service which in turn the homeowners can submit it to the insurance company including the loss of the house.

I am certain they will have a lawsuit or changes in the city rules of using fire department services for the non paying customers making them to pay the full charges.

Sorry I disagree!

The home owners did not pay the fee, they knew about the fee, just didn't pay it. Probably never have ever paid it, and it was never an issue until the house caught fire.

Well this is exactly why you pay your yearly fee. The home owners were gambling with their home, and they lost.

I am a former volunteer firefighter, for a small town. When I was a volunteer the town had fire protection, the parish (same as county) did not. We would respond to fires outside of the city limits as a courtesy, we had 300 gallons of water on the pumper, and that was it. 10-15 minute response time, only 300 gallons, and sometimes only 3 or 4 volunteers available to respond. The structure in this story was a mobile home, add extended response time, forget it, you save your resourses for a fire you can fight.

In our town the volunteers had a charter obligating us to protect the town, so if an out of limits call came in, only 1/2 of the firefighters that responded could be sent outside the town, the remaining half had to stand duty to protect the town. Likewise with the 2 pumpers we had, only 1 could respond outside of the city limits.

Another way to look at it. If everyone paid their fee as required, the firefighters would have more money for equipment, maybe hire a professional or 2, increase training for the guys the do have. Even maybe charter a dept in rural areas.

What if there was people in that house? At what point does the $75 dollars get waived?

i have to say it doesnt make me sick at all.

the fee is there for a reason, if they helped non payers noone would ever pay it.

in the uk its different and its included in the council tax but fire protection is one thing i would pay.

€75 works out to what, less than a buck fifty a week, seems a small price to pay imo

That is BS! I wonder if there were people caught inside, unable to get out, would they still stand by and do nothing?!

I am very thankful that my Volunteer Fire Dept. shows up to ALL fires and puts them OUT!!

I think that this is absolutely HORRIBLE !! To think that a person's home would be deliberately allowed to burn to the ground and lose everything they have because of $75. What if there had been a disabled person in the home? What if a baby had been in the house? Would the firefighters have stood by and let them burn? This truly makes me nauseated. The article said the firefighters came to the scene and just stood there? Why? Why bother to come at all? I don't get it. We all know that money is tight these days, for everybody - these people may not have had $75 to pay. I just think this is deplorable. Is this what humanity has come to? I find this so very, very sad.

On that note - I live in a rural area. I am not from this area. I have never received a bill from our local fire department, so I have no idea if we have to pay a yearly fee or not. You can bet your boots I'll be on the phone in 5 minutes to find out.

I read about that on huff post. Wonder if we will be paying a service fee for police now too. Will they too just stand by while someone attacks us saying," Sorry you did not pay the yearly fee that is required for police services."

As for the family in this article I feel for them, HOWEVER the fee is no different than car, life, medical, home insurance. If you live in a place that requires it then you should pay it JUST IN CASE.

I think having the firefighters there doing nothing would have felt worse than not having them show up. Maybe they are there to prevent the spread of the fire, but to me it would feel like they are giving the, "See told you so." kind of looks.

I think they would have gone in to save people but otherwise let the home burn with all possesions inside.

I say if you don't like this fee move, but with the way things are I bet more places will adopt this fee for service. The pisser will be if you pay the fee,but the paperwork gets messed up and shows you did not....while your house is burning.

I use to live in an area that had an annual fee for the services of the volunteer fire department, and so many people refused to pay, they eventually got the go ahead to incorporate that fee in to the property taxes.

The fee is there for a reason, it is a shame that people who do not pay have tragedies, but it does not make me nauseated. A volunteer department needs resources like equipment, and people. These people took their chances and lost.

As for recovering the fees from insurance....if they don't pay a low cost protection fee, what makes you think they would pay for insurance?
