Dear Backyard Chickens,
I'm a microbiologist and my research has recently been focused on the origins of the virus that causes fowlpox in many backyard chickens. I’m trying to get virus samples of chickens that have pox for my research, but since I work in New York City, I don't know many (or any really) people that keep backyard chickens. I know many of you post questions about your chickens being infected with fowlpox, so I'd like your help in collecting some samples.
I want to stress a few things first though:
1) My research is in NO way intended to harm you or your chickens. I would only need a few dry pox scabs that are often removed as part of the routine care of chickens with pox.
2) I will not publish or distribute the names, addresses, or any personal information associated with anyone who sends me samples. That is, unless anyone would like to be credited.
3) We will pay for any shipping costs for sending us samples.
4) We are a non-profit research institute, and have no affiliations with any government agencies. Which is to say, we have no interest in reporting anyone for keeping backyard chickens.
